Me and Biddles McSquid
The story of me, my company and my alter ego problem.
Hello. My name is Dennis Alexander, and I am a Professional Hypocrite. You see, for most of my life I thought I was "normal," whatever that is. I never could figure out what "normal" was in the first place but everyone demand that I be... that.
Then, sometime in the summer of 2008, when I was 40, I discovered that I am actually an Autistic. "Oh! Okay! So that explains why..." Finally I had the answers to so much of my life that had left me in confusion. It might also explain why I have such incredible mental insights and perspectives. It also could explain my genius IQ and a lot of the amazing skills I've had or developed over my life.
It also explains why I can never be a salesman, politician and why I was always the last one chosen for volleyball (in spite of the fact that I was actually pretty good at volleyball). It also explains why I have a very long resume and have difficulty getting and keeping jobs, friends and a spouse. (Actually, the spouse has been amazingly helpful and reliable, but we've had our challenges.
I've worked a lot of different jobs in a lot of different fields. And each job seemed to get shorter in duration as my anxiety grew. As it often goes for us very high-functioning Autistics like myself, anxiety usually leads to depression, and depression often leads to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Trying to work jobs that made absolutely unrealistic demands on my fascinatingly different brain broke me. Thus I can't work a job anymore. So, I consult. With all the amazing skills and knowledge I've developed from multiple fields and my ability to cross-connect different concepts, I have been able to bring tremendous value to my clients.
"But the name, Biddles McSquid? Really?" Yes. Really. You're not going to forget it, are you. The meaning behind the family name Biddle is "bid, command or messenger." Thus its synonymous with the name "James," "Jeeves," or "Alfred;" that of a butler or other paid servant. I am at your service. And, the Biddle family may actually be in my bloodline! The "Mc" part comes from my alter ego James A MacAlister which has its own story below. "Squid?" Yes. James is a "True Maverick Extraordinaire" and stands apart from whatever crowd he's in. He's a Steampunker, and Steampunkers are into Kraken. Well, a maverick would have to be different and just call it a squid.
Mr. James A MacAlister
James is my alter ego; a Steampunk Cowboy. Not sure what Steampunk is? Well, imagine if we never left the Victorian era of steampower (technically, we still use steam to produce power), brass gears, proper fashion, a taste for adventure, and proper manners. And there were cowboys in that era, out here in the West, where I live. Just reference the movie Wild Wild West without the tacky, typical storyline and you've got a Steampunk Cowboy.
I created James about the time PTSD hit. Apparently, victims of PTSD will often reach for their creative side for therapy. I created Mr. James A MacAlister, True Maverick Extraordinaire! And a full-length feature film is in the works, and a variety of other creative projects. In fact, I've created more works of art and what-not than I have my previous life before PTSD! Of course, the greatest works of art often come from great suffering and tension.
I mentioned my alter ego issue earlier; Well, I created him and he created me. Now before you think I need to go see a mental health professional, let me also remind you that I called myself a "Professional Hypocrite," that I suffer from anxiety, depression and PTSD... OK, that didn't help either, did it. Ummm...
Just take a look at my TEDx Talk below for all the answers...
